On June 22, 2021, Representative Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District presented President Susan A. Cole with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol. This was done in recognition of her Dr. Cole’s 23 years of distinguished service to Montclair State University. The Sprague Library Archives is proud to announce that, before she retired, President Cole donated this flag to the Archives.
The Capitol Flag Program began in 1937 when a Member of Congress requested a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol. The Architect of the Capitol fulfills all flag requests from members of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. Flags are flown daily year-round, weather permitting, excluding Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Currently, the Architect of the Capitol fulfills on average more than 100,000 flag requests from Members of Congress annually, with the number of requests and the popularity of the Capitol Flag Program growing steadily each year.
