Lessons meet once a week in the Cali School of Music Building (Chapin Hall) in coordination with the Extension Division’s 14-week fall semester calendar. Individuals must be five or older and fully vaccinated. Proof of vaccination is required. Masks are currently optional indoors but subject to change. All individuals coming to campus must complete a HAWK CHECK each time before they come to campus. In addition, all individuals accompanying students inside the Cali Music Building must be fully vaccinated and be able to provide proof of vaccination upon request. The Extension Division office will communicate any changes in Montclair State University’s policy and guidelines as circumstances change or new information becomes available.

- Indicate the Instrument/Voice/Composition lesson you want and select the length of lesson
- Email us your completed registration form along with proof of vaccination
Upon receipt of your registration form the Extension Division office will start working on processing your schedule requests. Once a schedule has been established the office will email confirmation and an invoice.
In-Person/On-Campus Lesson Fees (14-week semester)
- 15-minute lessons: $420
- 30-minute lessons: $630
- 45-minute lessons: $840
- 60-minute lessons: $1,120
There is a $25 semester registration fee added to the total cost of lessons.
Beginning Fall 2022, there is an additional 5% fee added to the total semester cost if paying by credit card. Amount will be indicated on invoice/bill.
Private lessons are available for piano, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, voice and composition.
ADVANCED LESSON INSTRUCTION
Advanced lesson instruction provides motivated students who are passionate about music performance or music composition the opportunity to study with John J. Cali School of Music performance and composition faculty. A 30-minute trial lesson/meeting is required for acceptance into this program area. Once accepted, students can set up a lesson schedule in coordination with the faculty member. Five to fifteen lessons may be arranged.
Trial Lesson: $50 (The trial lesson must be paid in full before the lesson can be scheduled. There are no additional fees.)
Advanced Studio Lessons Fees: (Must be accepted into the program area)
45-minute lessons: $75 per lesson
60-minute lessons: $95 per lesson
There is a $10 processing fee in addition to the cost of the lessons.
Private Studio Lessons
Private Studio Lessons provide one-on-one comprehensive training with a skilled artist-teacher. Our instructors are able to work with beginning students through the very advanced. Private Studio Lessons meet once a week in coordination with the program’s semester calendars.
Instrumental
Students age four and older interested in instrumental lessons can take private lessons ranging in duration from 15-minutes for the very young to 60-minutes for the more advanced student. Private instrumental lessons are available for piano, strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion.
Vocal
Students interested in vocal lessons generally start at age 12 or later. An initial meeting with a vocal faculty member is required before scheduling vocal lessons.
Composition
Students interested in composition lessons must be proficient in note and rhythm reading. Students are encouraged to bring any examples of pieces they have created.
Advanced Studio Instruction for Advanced Level High School, College and Adult Students
Advanced studio instruction provides motivated, advanced-level High School, College and Adult Students who are passionate about music performance or music composition the opportunity to study with John J. Cali School of Music performance and composition faculty. A 30-minute trial lesson/meeting is required for acceptance into this premier program area.
For Adults
Private Studio Lessons provide one-on-one comprehensive training with a skilled artist-teacher. Our instructors are able to work with beginning adult students through intermediate-advanced level who are looking to further refine their technique and artistry. Adult students are welcome to participate in the regular Extension Division private studio lessons which consists of a 14-week semester. Knowing how busy many adult schedules are the John J. Cali School of Music Extension Division is now offering a more flexible lesson option for adult students who are not able to commit to a complete 14-week semester. Adult students can opt to commit to any number of lessons ranging from five to 12 per semester. The specific lesson schedule and dates will be coordinated with the Extension Division faculty member.
