Mark your calendar and join us for Fridays with ITDS, a monthly interview series in a casual, informal virtual learning space spotlighting the unique contributions University faculty, staff, and leadership are providing to teaching and learning at Montclair State University!

Now entering the third year of Generative AI available at our fingertips, faculty in higher education continue to discover new ways to leverage the technology in their classrooms. This semester, Fridays with ITDS aims to spark innovation and creativity by showcasing specific ways GenAI can be your ally and partner in teaching and learning. Specific success stories, upcoming GenAI innovations, and other practical use cases will be shared.

Enhancing Student Success with Custom GPTs: An NYU Case Study

Building Custom GPTs for your course can provide personalized AI companions that deliver tailored support, facilitate role-playing activities, enhance learning outcomes, and more. Dr. Steven Goss, clinical faculty member and chair of the Management and Technology program at NYU’s School of Professional Studies, joins Fridays with ITDS to showcase how Custom GPTs are transforming learning at New York University. Drawing on years of research into “implementation-based learning,” Dr. Goss has developed innovative AI chatbots to address classroom challenges and enrich student experiences. Discover how the “subject knowledge bot” and “project knowledge bot” empower students and streamline project development. Participants will explore AI-driven teaching strategies and engage in live demonstrations of these tools.

Dr. Steven Goss, Ed.D., is a clinical faculty member and chair of the Management and Technology program in the Division of Business Programs at NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS). He joined NYU SPS after serving as the Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Manhattan University. Before Manhattan, he led several successful online initiatives at Teachers College, Columbia University, Bank Street College of Education, and New York University, including The Center for Faculty Innovations in Teaching and Learning at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. He has taught diverse student audiences, including K-12, undergraduate, and graduate students. His courses closely relate to his academic interests, including online education, technology innovation, and experiential learning. He has received awards from The Association for the Advancement of Education in Computing (AACE) and the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) for his research on learner-centered online education. Dr. Goss received his Ed.D. in Instructional Technology and Media from Teachers College, Columbia University. He has published a book on practices for transformative online teaching through Teachers College Press, titled Transforming Online Teaching in Higher Education, Essential Practices in Engagement, Inquiry, and Equity, with co-authors Dr. Robin Hummel and Laura Zadoff.
