Principal Investigator (PI)
The Principal Investigator must be a Montclair State University faculty or staff member. They are typically the person conducting the research study. In the case of student-led research studies, the Faculty Sponsor is listed as the PI, and the student is listed as the Primary Contact. The PI must always certify an IRB submission before it is submitted to the IRB office.
Primary Contact (PC)
Each study must have a Primary Contact as well as a PI. The PC is the primary point of contact with the IRB staff for a study. Like other research team members, the PC can work on a submission, but all submissions must be certified by the PI before it is submitted to the IRB staff. Faculty/staff members leading a research study can be both the PI and the PC. A Montclair State University student or a different faculty/staff member can also be the PC on a faculty/staff-led study. In the case of a student-led research study, the student should be the PC and their faculty sponsor must be the PI. The person listed as the PC must have a Cayuse IRB Account, which can be requested at the main Cayuse IRB webpage.
Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)
The Co-PI role is for other individuals highly invested and active in the conduction of the research study. To enter a person as a Co-PI in the designated section in the Cayuse IRB Initial Submission, the individual must be affiliated with Montclair State and have a Cayuse IRB Account, which can be requested at the main Cayuse IRB webpage. If your Co-PI is not affiliated with the University, they can be identified in the “List and Roles of Research Team Members” section of the submission seen below:
Be sure to identify which research team members are not affiliated with Montclair State and to attach their human subjects research training certificate. Only Co-PIs that are affiliated with Montclair State and have a Cayuse IRB account will be able to edit the submission in Cayuse IRB.
Key Research Team Members
All other Montclair State affiliated individuals active in the research study should be identified in the Key Research Team Members section of the Cayuse IRB submission. In order to be listed here, individuals must have a Cayuse IRB account, which can be requested at the main Cayuse IRB webpage. These individuals will be able to edit the submission in Cayuse IRB. Other research team members that are not affiliated with the University should be identified in the “List and Roles of Research Team Members” section. They will be unable to edit the submission in Cayuse IRB.
