Food choices for Romans of modest means were relatively easy: they ate what was available to them. For the elite Roman who espoused traditional values, what to eat was a more complicated matter. Imported delicacies at a dinner party could indicate wealth, but also risked being seen as a socially unacceptable level of extravagance. A simple menu, however, might fail to impress one’s guests. What was a wealthy Roman to do?
