The “Golden Rule”: Why Abide By It?

Posted in: Institute for the Humanities

April 19, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Dickson Hall, Brantl Hall

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is a principle of most of the major faiths of the world, and a truism with which we bring up children ("How would you like it if Johnny did that to you?" we ask the child who has just snatched Johnny’s candy).  But is abiding by the "golden rule" always the most ethical way to live?  Some say not.  George Bernard Shaw, for example, once famously remarked "Do not do unto others as you would that they should do unto you. Their tastes may not be the same."

This panel discussion will debate the merits of both sides from the perspective of faculty representing all five colleges on campus.
