Surtitling and Audiodescription for Opera at the Sferisterio Arena
As part of a broader initiative about translation and pre-professional opportunities for students, the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies and the Italian Program at Montclair State University are pleased to launch the SECOND EDITION of this seven-week summer internship (June 17-Aug. 5, 2018) at the prestigious Sferisterio Arena in Macerata in connection with the summer opera season.
The selected intern will work on the surtitling of live operas within a translation and accessibility project overseen by a team of experts at the Macerata Opera Festival and the University of Macerata. The intern is expected to work closely with this team and communicate effectively in Italian at the advanced level, both orally and in writing. Responsibilities will include: collaboration on the development of the surtitles (translation, editing, timing) and their deployment during live performances, as well as involvement in organizational aspects of the productions.
This is a paid internship supported by a $5,000 scholarship provided by Mr. Inserra via the Lawrence R. Inserra, Jr. Scholarship (Montclair State University Foundation). The intern will receive a stipend for the summer work as well as credit for tuition and fees (if the student is graduating only the former will apply). For details about the scholarship, please contact Ana Gomez at the MSU Foundation)
Lodging in Macerata will be covered by the Associazione Arena Sferisterio for the whole stay. The student is responsible for the airfare, meals and incidentals.
The amount of hours to be covered during the stay in Macerata will be spelled out in the agreement with the student and hosting institution after the selection of the intern (note that distribution of hours during the week may vary depending on the calendar of rehearsals and shows and may include evenings and weekends).
Once the trip is planned, the intern is required to register at this website to follow federal regulations for student travel. For more information, please contact the Office of International Engagement on campus.
Eligibility: Advanced students enrolled in the Italian Program.
Preference will be given to students who:
- are current majors (or minors) in Italian
