What is the role of surtitling in today’s landscape of global communication, and what are the technical and artistic models it employs in connecting translation to live performance?

This workshop will address these questions by focusing on select materials produced within the 2015 “Titling Voices Across Continents” project (see VIDEO), in which Montclair State students surtitled prominent plays for the EXPO 2015 calendar of performances at the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, Italy. On Dec. 11, international and local guest speakers will talk about the techniques and technologies used in translating and titling for theater, the importance of these tools for the fruition of live performances, and their use from different points of view (the production, the mise-en-scène, the actors).

This is an ideal program for students, professors, and experts in fields such as world languages, communication and media, linguistics, theater, and opera, among others.

We have reached capacity and the RSVP is now closed.
