In referencing the Grand Tour album, the lecture illustrates the gallery of postcard-like images that since the unification have lured foreign travelers to Italy as well as those images that by contrast made the country into a threatening place for visitors. In focusing on the work of contemporary Italian photographers (Barbieri, Ghirri) who have worked in the interstices of these two opposite representations, the lecture provides a more critical reading of Italy’s landscape, artistic and architectural heritage, and people. Presented in Italian with English subtitles and consecutive translation.
