Dr. Fiore Publishes Article on Teaching Transnational Italian Studies

Dr. Teresa Fiore, Professor of Italian and Inserra Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, published an article titled “Introducing Transnational Italian Studies to a Graduate Program” in a Special issue of Forum Italicum: “Critical Issues in Transnational Italian Studies,” edited by Serena Bassi, Loredana Polezzi and Giulia Riccò.

The article is based on the experience of teaching an interdisciplinary graduate seminar at Yale in Spring 2022, titled “Transnational Italy: Imperial Legacies and Migratory Routes,” addressing multiple forms of mobility from the modern to the contemporary period: early imperialism under Spanish rule; colonial routes in Africa and the Mediterranean; emigration flows to practically all continents; and contemporary immigration often carrying the legacy of colonialism or imperialism.

The seminar was a great opportunity to explore the transnational approach in terms of expanding perspectives, rethinking the self-contained view of Italy, reflecting the diversity of the Italian society and classroom, as well as considering the challenges and losses potentially embedded in the transnational lens.

The article is part of a list of rich contributions in this special issue, offering a broader view of Italian Studies in the third millennium: the volume functions as a thorough illustration of this approach and is thus bound to dynamically affect the field transnationally.
