Greek Life at Montclair State University is just one of a number of ways for your student to get involved on campus and make lifelong friendships. Greek Life is made up of 43 chapters on campus that consist of groups that are founded on leadership, scholarship, philanthropy and service. Every Greek organization is overseen by the Office of Greek Life to ensure they are abiding by policies. Being a part of a Greek organization is an enriching college experience that will stay with your child far past their college years. Greek organizations provide a foundation for developing relationships and networking with alumni/ae to prepare them for after college.

Hazing is against both state and federal law and Montclair State University makes every effort to create an environment that is fair, humane and respectful for all students, faculty and staff. The University is unconditionally opposed to any activities sponsored by any organization, student athletic team or group of students that involves hazing of any member of the Montclair State University Community. All of our chapters are updated every semester on hazing policies through the Office of Greek Life along with state and federal regulations. It is mandated that every chapter president and new member educator along with new members joining an organization attend a Hazing Prevention Workshop conducted through the Office of Greek Life before they start a new process. They are also mandated to sign an Anti Hazing Agreement Contract and take a quiz before they are able to start.

One of the foundational pillars to be a member of a Greek organization at Montclair State University and found all over the country is the emphasis on scholarship. First and foremost, academics are the student’s primary responsibility when attending a university and therefore the Office of Greek Life is establishing a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) for membership.  This initiative will begin in Spring 2015 by mandating all individuals to maintain a 2.7 GPA minimum. It is important to emphasize to your child that even though they are dedicating a lot of time and energy to a Greek organization, they must still focus on their academics. The Office of Greek Life is here to help in terms of balancing the demands of a Greek organization and academics, our Greek Academic Probation Plan allows for students who are struggling with academics to receive help from our academic support offices and learn time management with the Office of Greek Life.

Greek Life Grade Point Requirements

Every chapter has its own expectations of its members in regards to finances. Have open conversations with your child about what is expected of them every semester. Typically, most organizations offer online payment and even payment plans so you can pay in installments rather than a large lump sum. It is important that to be active in the organization and through the Office of Greek Life they stay up to date on their finances to the organization.

Being a part of a Greek organization is a huge time commitment; every chapter and the Office of Greek Life expect our members to uphold the highest standards. It is important to have open communication with your child in terms to time commitment and making sure they are not dedicating too much time to a Greek organization if they are not properly balancing academics, work or other requirements. All organizations and the Office of Greek Life understand that they are students first; however, they need to make sure that they know how to properly communicate if they cannot commit to requirements laid out by the chapter.
