Student Spotlight: Alexander Oliver, MA in Educational Leadership

Alexander is a current student in the MA in Educational Leadership program.

Please describe your undergraduate background. How did it lead you to your current graduate program?

I completed my undergraduate degrees at a small, private, primarily liberal arts institution. I was very involved there as a student leader, holding multiple roles on campus over time. It was that experience of complete immersion – both in student and academic affairs – that led me to this program.

How would you describe your academic program and the areas of study it focuses on?

Pedagogically, the program is exactly what I was looking for; it really approaches higher education from a wide lens. No two courses are alike, nor are the expectations. Personally, I am more oriented toward academic affairs, but the exposure and diversity of experiences fits really well with my wide, liberal arts background.

Thus far, what has been your favorite aspect of your graduate program? What are you currently working on?

So far I have really enjoyed both the passion and commitment of the faculty, along with their active interest in the professional development of myself and my classmates. The program is still young and developing, and we have also had the chance to provide input and help shape it for future cohorts. Currently, I am working on several research projects with faculty and staff.

Looking forward, how do you anticipate this program will assist you in your career?

The faculty involved with this program have been phenomenal in terms of assisting my professional development. They have helped point me toward great opportunities to get involved in a leadership capacity both on campus and off. It is my intention to eventually pursue a PhD in this field and move toward a faculty position; the willingness of faculty and staff to involve me so intimately with research speaks volumes to their dedication to help me get there.
