Veronica is a current graduate student in the MA in Communication Sciences & Disorders, Speech Language Pathology concentration.
Please describe your undergraduate background. How did it lead you to your current graduate program?
I previously attended Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey where I obtained a bachelors degree in Linguistics. At Rutgers, I was involved in multiple research labs and writing courses. I knew that I wanted to attend a graduate program like Montclair State that provides research and writing opportunities to students.
How would you describe your academic program and the areas of study it focuses on?
The Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) program encompasses a wide variety of coursework and clinical experience. Upon completion of the program, students are prepared to work with clients all across the lifespan and throughout all areas of SLP practice. This includes counseling, diagnosing, treating, and all other parameters.
Thus far, what has been your favorite aspect of your graduate program? What are you currently working on?
This graduate program allows students to gain experience in a state-of- the-art clinical setting. Not only does the program teach students to follow the gold standard for clinical practice, it also allows them to use advanced tools for therapy and research. I am currently involved in research GA position that specializes in aphasia, an acquired neurological condition that impacts language and communication.
Looking forward, how do you anticipate this program will assist you in your career?
Students in this program have an opportunity to pursue some of the most well-respected clinical externship placements in the state. A great externship placement can have a huge impact on my job opportunities after graduating and it is a great way to create lasting professional relationships.
