The Development Department of the Division of University Advancement is charged with the responsibility and authority to initiate, encourage, coordinate, and review all private fundraising activities and development programs relating to individuals, corporations, foundations and special interest groups. The department concerns itself primarily with fundraising and development in the private sector.
The Development Department has the primary responsibility for developing and maintaining liaison between the University and the MSU Foundation and for all relationships with the private sector–including alumni, friends, business enterprises, foundations and corporations. The department also is responsible for the good stewardship of those relations by maintenance of related records and personal contact.
Units within the Division work closely with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and all academic departments, centers and/or schools and colleges to maximize the effectiveness of Montclair State’s fundraising efforts and to ensure coordination of all University development activities.
The responsibilities of Development within the division include, but are not limited to, the cultivation of prospects, the solicitation of gifts and grants, and receiving, accepting, recording, announcing, and reporting of all gifts from private sources; and opening and maintaining channels of communication with all private funding sources.
The fund-raising programs conducted by the Division include:
- Annual Giving – unrestricted and restricted yearly gifts to all areas of the University.
- Major Gifts – major and multi-year gifts, including but not limited to support for capital facilities, endowments and programmatic initiatives from individuals, corporations, foundations and associations related to specific University-wide goals and opportunities.
- Special Projects – gifts from individuals and grants from corporations and foundations for special departmental, college/school and institutional needs.
- Planned Giving – Forms of philanthropy that include bequests through wills, real estate and deferred giving programs through which a donor can make a commitment now, although the University will not benefit from the commitment until a future date.
