You may assign your students an end-of-term reflection to help them make sense of what they have learned. As an instructor, you may also benefit from spending a few minutes reflecting at term’s end. Afterward, you can put your responses aside, take a break, and return to them when you begin to plan for the next term.
Here are a few questions to guide you–you can choose to answer all or some, or come up with your own:
- What most surprised you about your course(s) this term? About your students?
- What would you identify as your greatest successes, big or small, in your teaching this term?
- What would you identify as your greatest challenges, big or small, in your teaching this term?
- What topic/reading/activity/assignment needs more time? What needs less time?
- What are the one or two things (topic/reading/activity/assignment) that you intend to keep the next time you teach this course? Why?
- What are the one or two things (topic/reading/activity/assignment) you intend to change or replace the next time you teach this course? Why?
- What are your essential takeaways from this term?
If you would like to talk through strategies for addressing issues your reflection raises, please contact OFE at faculty@montclair.edu, set up a one-on-one consultation to brainstorm, or use our syllabus and assignment review service.
