The POD Teaching with Technology (TwT) SIG is pleased to host two discussions this spring on topics of high importance to our members. All POD members are welcome to join! These discussions will involve a presentation from each guest followed by time for questions and comments.

Techniques for Improving Online Student Learning

Guest: Flower Darby

Flower Darby is passionate about increasing student success through engaging, innovative teaching approaches and effective instructional design. As a faculty member and director of teaching for student success at Northern Arizona University, Darby designs in-person, online, and blended classes that support students in their learning. She has taught at NAU for more than 20 years in a range of areas from English literature to educational technology to dance to Pilates. She loves to apply effective teaching and learning principles across the disciplines both in her classes and in those of the faculty she supports at NAU. Darby is the co-author, with James M. Lang, of Small Teaching Online (Jossey-Bass, 2019).

Principles to Guide the Use of Educational Technology in Higher Education

Guest: Derek Bruff

Derek Bruff is director of the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching and a principal senior lecturer in the Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics. As director, he oversees the Center’s programming and offerings for faculty and graduate students, helping them develop foundational teaching skills and explore new ideas in teaching and learning. He also consults regularly with campus leaders about pedagogical issues, seeking to foster a university culture that supports effective teaching. Bruff’s scholarly interests include educational technology, faculty development, and visual thinking. He writes about these topics on his blog, Agile Learning, and his second book, Intentional Tech: Principles to Guide the Use of Educational Technology in College Teaching, will be published in 2019 by West Virginia University Press. His first book, Teaching with Classroom Response Systems: Creating Active Learning Environments, was published by Jossey-Bass in 2009. Bruff served on the board of directors of the POD Network from 2010 to 2013.
