Learning from Immigrant Student Activists: The Professional Licenses Campaign
Posted in: Opportunities
Presentation by Students from Make the Road New Jersey
Date: Wednesday, February 12th
Time: 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: University Hall 3002
In New Jersey, undocumented students are barred from obtaining the professional licenses they need to work in such fields as teaching, therapy and legal services. Other states have seen DACA-eligible students fill these key roles when they are offered the opportunity. Now young immigrant students in New Jersey are organizing and advocating for an expansion of access to professional licenses that would allow all students to realize their potential and make contributions to the broader community. This presentation will include an overview of the issue, an explanation of the advocacy strategies being used and a discussion of how teachers and others can learn from the work of student activists.
