Overview
Program Overview
- The Montclair State University Facilities Apprenticeship Program offers formal Trades training and career advancement for internal staff affiliated with the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE) bargaining unit.
Apprenticeship Positions
- We currently offer four positions focused on Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC instruction.
US Department of Labor
- This program is registered through the U.S. Department of Labor, providing hands-on training and technical instruction to help participants achieve Journeyman status and enhance their career prospects at Montclair State University.
RTI
Technical Instruction
- Apprentices will attend evening classes at Passaic County Technical Institute to receive the required technical instruction.
- Classes are held two nights per week 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
- Hands-on training will supplement campus on-the-job learning.
- Apprentices are required to complete a minimum of 576 hours of related technical instruction.

On The Job Training
- The term of the Apprenticeship Program is approximately 4 years with an on-the-job training (OJT) attainment of 8,000 hours
- Each Apprentice will be assigned a Mentor who will provide them with guidance and support and help them navigate the program and develop their skills
Requirements
Apprenticeship Requirements
- Apprentices must be at least 18 years of age
- A high school diploma or GED
- Pass an ACT aptitude test
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Submit a resume and participate in the interview process
- Successfully pass the probationary period
- Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays
