F.I.R.E. Bowl Rules and Regulations

Posted in: Fire Safety Updates

By submitting the Fire Information and Rescue Education (F.I.R.E.) Bowl pretest, contest participants agree to the following rules and regulations:

-Any form of cheating is grounds for immediate elimination.

-During the F.I.R.E. Bowl competition, the Department of Fire Safety may film and/or take pictures of the event and participants for future marketing of the F.I.R.E. Bowl.  All participants agree to allow the Department of Fire Safety to take their picture and/or to film them.  The pictures and film may be used to market the F.I.R.E. Bowl to outside agencies and they may appear on the fire safety website.

-This competition is only open to current, resident, undergraduate students of Montclair State University.

-These rules may be subject to change with or without notice, until the date of the competition.  Please check this website regularly for any additions or omissions.

-This list of rules and regulations is available through the “updates feed” on the Department of Fire Safety’s website.

Pretest

-To be entered into the contest, participants must first take a pretest.

-Entrants must provide complete contact information including his/her name, net id, building name, and room number.  Failure to provide the appropriate information will result in disqualification.

-Entrants are limited to taking the pretest one time.  If an error occurs during the submission of the pretest, the entrant is responsible for contacting the Department of Fire Safety at fire@montclair.edu.

-In the event that an entrant changes his/her room to another building, the entrant will be rated against other individuals from the residence hall in which the entrant resided at the time he/she submitted his/her pretest.

-After the pretests are scored, all entrants will be rated against others from his/her residence hall/group of buildings (see the list, below).  The top three individuals from each hall/group of buildings will be placed on a team.  Each team will represent their residence hall/group of buildings at the F.I.R.E. Bowl competition on October 12, 2011.

F.I.R.E. Bowl Competition:

-If a team member cannot be present during the event, because of class, work, or other scheduling conflict and/or for any other reason, he/she must notify the Department of Fire Safety, who will assign alternative individuals to the team.  This will be done in conjunction with Residential Education and Services.

-The competition:

The first rounds will be between:

-Bohn Hall and The Village

-Dinallo Heights and Machuga Heights

-Russ Hall/Freeman Hall/Webster Hall and Hawk Crossings/Sinatra Hall

The winning team with the highest score, from the above round, will automatically go to the final round.  During the semi-final round, the two other winning teams with the second and third highest scores will compete to determine who will move on to the final round.   Even if a losing team has a higher score than a winning team from another round,  that team will be eliminated, as they have lost their round.

The winning team of the final bracket will be the first place winner, the competing team will be the second place winner.  The team during the semi-finals round, who does not go on to the final round, shall be the third place winner.

In each round, each set of teams will be asked ten questions worth five points each, followed by ten questions worth ten points each.  Teloseill loose points for incorrect answers.  In the event of a tie, “tie-breakers,” worth one point each, will be asked until one team answers either correctly or incorrectly.  Scores are not cumulative; each team will start with zero points at the beginning of each round.

Although teams may answer questions before the question is fully asked, it is in each team’s best interest to listen to the entire question prior to answering.  At this time, buzzers will be used to determine which team is to answer the question first (like in Jeopardy, but with two teams, rather than three individuals).  Please monitor this news feed in the event of a change in this procedure.

Each answer is subject to the approval of a panel of judges with fire prevention and suppression experience.

Any audience members who shout out answers to questions while teams are competing will be asked to leave the competition.  If the audience member is part of a team, that team shall forfeit the round.

Forfeitures:

If a team forfeits for any reason (member disqualification, cheating, not having three team members, etc.), the following will take place:  In the event that a team forfeits after the first round, the last team that the forfeited team has competed against shall take their place.  In the event that a team forfeits during the first round, the team without a competitor shall automatically progress to the semi-final round and compete against the second highest scoring team.  The highest scoring team shall still progress to the final round and will face the winner of the semi-final round.  In the event of a forfeiture in the final round, the competing team (the team that did not forfeit) shall be declared the first place winner and the loser of the semi-final round shall be declared the second place winner; there will be no third place winner in this case.

-If the participant has any questions regarding the contest, they may be directed to fire@montclair.edu.
