Ilene Wachs, successful entrepreneurial leader, is President of Horizon Casualty Services, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, the state’s largest health insurer with revenue in excess of $10 billion. When Horizon made a decision to expand and diversify its business portfolio, Ilene was selected to lead Horizon Casualty Services from initial new venture capitalization through full maturity. Under her passionate strategic leadership, Horizon Casualty Services evolved to be Horizon’s most successful subsidiary ever conceived. Today, the company, which provides health services to some of the largest workers’ compensation and auto insurers, has more than 40 percent market share, processes $1 billion in medical bills annually and generates a significant portion of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey’s annual operating profit.
Ilene has more than 25 years of diversified healthcare and insurance industry experience both domestically and internationally including executive leadership, technology strategy, risk management and creation of successful industry leading innovations that leapfrog over the competitors. Her previous experience includes President/CEO of CompScope, Inc., a New York-based, loss-control consulting firm, an array of hospital leadership positions at Montefiore Medical Center, a major New York City teaching hospital and consultant to the British National Health Service, Royal Free Hospital, London, England based on grant funding received in connection with an unsolicited proposal that she conceived to improve medical outcomes.
Ilene’s current and prior board leadership and strategic advisory experience includes: Board Director, Horizon Casualty Services, Inc.; Board Director, Women’s Forum of New York, Education Fund; Vice Chair, Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey; Member Girl Scout Council Realignment Committee; Director, Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties; Member, Regent’s Advisory Council; and Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Ilene received her Master of Public Health degree from Yale University. She is a member of the New York and International Women’s Forums. Special awards include Legal Momentum Aiming High Award, New Jersey ACHE Healthcare Executive Award, Women’s Fund Honoree – Distinguished Woman in Finance and Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey Outstanding Philanthropist Award.
