Lucy McDiarmid Events: Women of the Easter Rising

April marks the centenary of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising and the Irish Revolution. In commemoration, Lucy McDiarmid, Marie Frazee-Baldassare Professor of English, has written a new book published by the Royal Irish Academy: At Home in the Revolution: What Women Said and Did in 1916.
‘Welcoming Ireland’ Cultural Celebration April 24
McDiarmid will give a lecture on April 24 as part of the centenary commemoration sponsored by the Consulate General of Ireland in New York and other community organizations.

Book tour and lectures
She’s in the midst of a book tour, giving lectures at locations near and far. Below is a sampling. Full list on her publisher’s website.
- Independent Spirit: America and the 1916 Easter Rising symposium with the Glucksman Ireland House NYU on Thursday, April 21.
- Taste of the Yeats Summer School at the Glucksman Ireland House NYU on April 2. Assistant professor Michael Robbins also spoke.
- Dublin, Easter 1916: What Was it Like?: A History Ireland Hedge Schools event with RTÉ, on March 28 at Trinity College Dublin. McDiarmid sat on a panel with editor Tommy Graham and John Gibney, Mary McAulliffe and Joe Connell. Podcast to come.
- The Monsignor Pádraig de Brún Memorial Lecture lecture entitled “Fairies, Rebels, Mothers: Lady Gregory and 1916.” Lecture given on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the National University of Ireland Galway. Watch the video. McDiarmid begins talking at the 7:50 minute mark.
- March 14: Interview with Patricia Coughlan, Professor of English at University College Cork, at Farmgate Cafe in Cork, Ireland. Watch a video of the lecture.
- “Jumping into the G.P.O: Women’s access to the Rising,” at Kilkenny Castle in Kilkenny, Ireland. Lecture delivered March 12.
Book launch in Manhattan
A launch event was also held for her book on March 1 in the United States. She gave a lecture at the Consulate General of Ireland in Manhattan called: “Jumping Into the GPO: Women in the Easter Rising.” McDiarmid, is pictured above, center, with Consul General Barbara Jones and LAOH President Mary Hogan at the launch.
