Montclair State University continues to be a leader amongst higher education institutions in utilizing mobile technology for students to assist them in all aspects of campus life. Through our partnership with Rave Mobile Safety, we provide safety, academic and auxiliary applications through use of the voice, text and data capabilities of today’s wireless carriers. Below are overviews of the Rave applications and individual instructions on how to use them:
Rave Alerts is the primary mobile communications tool at Montclair State University that notifies the campus community in emergency situations, as well as other vital scenarios that might impact the campus.
Students are automatically registered through their emergency contact information in NEST.
Please ensure your emergency contact information is accurate. All broadcast alerts for situations including school closings, power outages, security threats, weather hazards, evacuations and natural disasters will be texted to your phone or your preferred email address or both.
- On your phone, open a web browser and go to nest.montclair.edu.
- Select “Personal Information” and click “Emergency Contacts.”
- It will open a new window. Click the word “Current.”
- Select “Cell” and enter your phone number. Hit “Submit.”

Faculty and Staff are automatically registered through their emergency contact information in Workday. Please view this document on how to update your personal information in Workday.

Who Can Sign Up?
Parents, family members and campus visitors can now receive the same messages sent to all Montclair State students, faculty and staff about campus emergencies, road detours, delayed openings and more.
Please Note: University faculty, staff and students are encouraged to continue to use the Rave website to sign up for the text alerts. This new opt-in list is specifically for campus visitors and users without a University NetID.
How to Sign Up!
Users can sign up at any time by texting the keyword montclairstatealerts to one of the following numbers: 226787, 67283, 78015 or 77295.
How Is This List Managed?
The opt-in users are placed on a separate list from the main Rave Text Alert that houses users with a University NetID. This new system is completely user-managed.
If a family member or visitor signs up for the Rave Text Alerts and wants to be taken off of the system, they can text “STOP” to one of the following numbers: 226787, 67283, 78015 or 77295. Texting “START” to any of these shortcodes will resume / reinstate the Alert messages.

Depending upon the user’s current mobile phone service plan and contract, their carrier may charge for text messages. Rave Guardian: Guardian is the award-winning safety application that makes your safe campus here at Montclair State University, safer. Guardian is a timer-based system accessed by using the free Guardian safety app and clicking on the Safety Timer icon and entering a PIN number that you create upon registration.

Follow the prompts to register your account. The email you use to register will be your University email address that ends in @montclair.edu.

Rave Guardian transforms your smartphone into a personal safety device, giving you peace of mind and boosting campus security. Here’s how to use it:
How the Safety Timer Works
- Before walking somewhere, like from the library to your residence hall, activate the Safety Timer.
- When you arrive safely, deactivate the timer. No alerts are sent in these passive cases.
- If the timer expires, University Police are notified with your safety profile and location.
What to Include in Your Timer Status
- Current location and destination.
- Residence hall and room number or vehicle details, if applicable.
- Who you’re meeting or where you’re headed, along with a brief clothing description.
- Pre-existing medical conditions, if relevant.
Deactivating a Timer
- Tap “Deactivate” and enter your PIN to end the timer.
- If the timer isn’t deactivated, University Police are alerted with your last location and safety profile.
Additional Safety Features
- Duress Code: Enter a PIN one number higher than your original to silently alert police of a potential emergency.
- PIN Expiry Notification: If too many incorrect PIN attempts are made, police are alerted, ensuring your safety if your phone is compromised.
- Location Services: If your timer expires, police can track your phone’s location with accuracy between 50-300 meters, depending on conditions.
Panic Call
If you need immediate help, tap “Call” in the Emergencies section of the app to alert University Police. This works with or without an active timer and automatically creates an active case with your safety profile and location.
Important Notes
- Police cannot access your location or profile unless your timer expires or you activate a panic call.
- Your timer will still expire and notify police even if your phone is turned off.
