Application Process:
The following need to be submitted electronically to Dr. Scott Kight, Associate Dean – College of Science and Mathematics at kights@montclair.edu:

  • A completed Novartis Scholarship Application (coming soon)
  • A precise and concise statement (not to exceed two pages) of interest in a career in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Copy(ies) of all college-level transcript(s)
  • Letter of recommendation from a research mentor, academic advisor, or a department chair
  • Research proposal in a field relevant to the pharmaceutical industry and destined to be converted into the student’s master’s thesis

Expectations:

  • Maintain full-time status with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 with no grade below a B
  • Be actively involved in the next PharmFest, pharma related activities and selected activities on the Novartis campus and will be eligible for and encouraged to participate in internships at Novartis
  • Participate in a University-based student research symposium plus contribute a research presentation at least one professional conference
The Margaret and Herman Sokol Graduate Fellowship in Science
Amount: $10,000
Criteria:
The Margaret and Herman Sokol Graduate Fellowship in Science is a ten thousand dollar ($10,000) award to a graduating natural science major from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSAM) at Montclair State University who will pursue formal, full-time graduate study leading to a doctoral (PhD) degree at an accredited institution of higher learning. This award will be restricted to students in the disciplines of biology, molecular biology, geoscience, physics, chemistry and biochemistry. Each year one graduating senior will be selected to receive one of these $10,000 fellowships. Applications will be reviewed following the fall semester and announcement of the award will be made in the spring each year.
The recipient of the award will be given a $5,000 stipend upon verification of enrollment for the first year of graduate study, and the additional $5,000 when she/he verifies that approximately half of the graduate program has been completed. The second $5,000 portion will be placed in trust in an interest-bearing account. The recipient will receive both the principal and interest at the time of the second award. In the event that the Fellow does not continue in the graduate program, the second award will not be granted and the money will be returned to the fund at Montclair State University.
Candidates for the award must have completed at least 60 semester hours at Montclair State University with at least 24 semester hours completed in their natural science major at Montclair State University by graduation. Candidates must submit formal application to the Department Chair on the form provided. Each department chair may nominate no more than one applicant in each discipline to the Dean, who will consult with the CSAM department chairs prior to making a determination of the award recipient.

Bonnie Lustigman Research Fellowship
Amount: Up to two awards per year; $1000-$2000 each based on fund availability
Criteria: Full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in at least six credits and majoring in a major housed within the Department of Biology and Molecular Biology, in good academic standing, with a minimum grade point average of 3.5 in the major.
The Bonnie Lustigman Research Fellowship has been established to financially assist talented undergraduate and graduate students to defray expenses of their own research while enrolled as a full-time Biology and Molecular Biology major at Montclair State University in the year in which the funds are awarded.
An award recipient must demonstrate a commitment to biology and molecular biology scholarship and research.
This award is founded in loving memory of Professor Bonnie Lustigman.

Charles E. Hadley Memorial Fund for Independent Student Research
Amount: Up to $250
Criteria: Demonstration of academic excellence and financial need.
The Hadley Fund provides grants for undergraduate students who have displayed both excellence of work and need for financial assistance to complete their research and independent study projects in Biology.

Jacob Goodman Scholarship
Amount: Approximately $500
Application Deadline: Recipient will be selected based on academic achievement (GPA) during the Fall semester and the award issued for the following Spring semester. Students do not need to file an application.
Criteria: Full-time undergraduate in the Biology Department with at least 90 credits completed towards the degree and at least one semester of study remaining. Financial need is not a consideration. Recipients will be selected based on academic achievement (minimum GPA of 3.2) and potential for making an outstanding contribution in the field of biology after graduation.
The Jacob Goodman Scholarship provides scholarship assistance for full-time, undergraduate students enrolled in the Biology Department at Montclair State University.
Viola Whitney Pfleger Fund
Amount: Up to $800
Criteria: Preferably a Biology major. Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the major. Experience in horticulture preferred.
The Viola Whitney Pfleger Fund has been established to support a student with sincere interest in botany or in conservation efforts affecting the plant environment.

Dr. Al Stein Memorial Fund
Amount: Approximately $250-500
Applications: Applications will be considered starting February 15; because this fund is for students in need of emergency funds, applications may also be considered outside of the normal application period. Contact the Biology department in Science Hall room 107 for application.
Criteria: Undergraduate recipients must have successfully completed one year of Biology core and collateral courses with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at the time of application. Graduate students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the time of application.
This fund has been established to financially assist full-time undergraduate and/or graduate students majoring in one of the degree programs offered in the Department of Biology and Molecular Biology. The Award is intended to assist students who are in need of emergency funds.
* We encourage successful applicants to restore the funds to the Biology and Molecular Biology Department and the Dr. Al Stein Memorial Fund when they are financially able to, in order to help future students in need.

S. Marie Kuhnen Scholarship
Amount: One scholarship per year; amount varies based on fund availability.
Applications: Applications will be considered beginning February 15 – March 15.
Criteria: Full-time undergraduate enrolled as a Biology major in the Department of Biology and Molecular Biology at Montclair State University, in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement; the financial need of a candidate will be a consideration. A recipient may receive a scholarship for a maximum of two years.
This fund has been established to financially assist one full-time undergraduate student enrolled as a Biology major at Montclair State University with an intention to teach. Student should be enrolled in field biology studies.

The Hans-Ulrich Gubler Undergraduate Award
Purpose: This undergraduate award was established in memory of Hans-Ulrich Gubler (1922-2010). H-U. Gubler was a Swiss microbiologist whose professional career spanned four decades. During that time he worked in a variety of biological research areas, most notably on the immunosuppressant properties of cyclosporine. His younger son emigrated to NJ in 1980 and his daughter-in-law is a Montclair State University Department of Biology alumna.
Eligibility: Demonstration of academic excellence and financial need.

Most scholarships in the Mathematics Department are determined by a department committee. Some scholarships are primarily based on merit, and others on a combination of merit and financial need. Audrey Vincentz Leef Scholarship
Amount: Varies
Criteria: An award to assist full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students, or to EOF students who plan on studying mathematics. The recipient must take at least one math course during the semester the scholarship is awarded and show evidence of financial need. This award is nominated by the scholarship committee with input from the department faculty.
Dr. Elton Robertson Technology Award
Amount: $1,500 annually for each recipient
Criteria: Full-time math majors enrolled in teacher certification program, good academic standing, financial need will be considered, have completed 85 credits toward their degree.
Noyce at Montclair Mathematics Scholarship
Amount: Two years of tuition and a small stipend
Criteria: Undergraduate students enrolled in the program leading to a Mathematics degree with K-6 teacher certification (MAEL). Juniors and Seniors admitted to the Teacher Ed. Program must have a 3.0 overall GPA, 2.75 mathematics GPA
Eligible applicants should apply at the same time that they apply to the Teacher Ed. program.
