On April 28, 2018 the Center for Environmental and Life Sciences filled with a vast array of research, ideas, and nerves. The Mario M. Casabona Future Scientists Program and Student Competition began with an open forum poster session for fellow students, faculty, staff, and industry professionals to get a glimpse into the work of the students competing in the event. These professionals, from various industries, were also gathering information to get a feel for the students and their projects as they were tasked with rating them later on their oral presentations. Interim Associate Dean Scott Kight led the event welcoming the attendees and participants and introducing the judges.
As the students began presenting it became clear that they took this opportunity very seriously and devoted plenty of time in preparation. Topics from application development to renewable energy made each of the twelve presentations original and intriguing coupled with their unique presentation styles adding their own flare to the already expansive subject matter. Presentations concluded and the students could now have a sense of relief, shifting the pressure onto the judges as they deliberated.
The judges returned with their decisions and the reception ceremony began with the recognition and praise of all the students for their tremendous representation of themselves, their departments, their mentors, and our College. Mr. Casabona announced the winners:
- Christopher Tenebruso, Earth and Environmental Studies, mentored by Dr. Jorge Lorenzo Trueba, third place
- Gerard Nasser, Biology, mentored by Dr. Kirsten Monsen, second place
- Mihal Grinberg, Biology, mentored by Dr. Carlos Molina, first place
