Joan Besing named ASHA Fellow
Posted in: Communication Sciences Disorders
Joan Besing, Ph.D., CCC-A, Program Director of both the Audiology Doctoral Program and the Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Program in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, was named a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She will be recognized at the 2013 ASHA annual conference to be held in Chicago, IL this November.
According to ASHA, "Fellowship is one of the highest honors the Association bestows. To be awarded Fellow, the nominee must have made outstanding contributions to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders." Dr. Besing is being recognized for achievements in three areas: teaching, scholarship, and service to ASHA.
ASHA notes that, "The key word for this award is "outstanding:" the nominee must truly stand out among one’s peers. The term implies contributions that are significant and would be so regarded within and beyond one’s community or state. While there are thousands of members who fulfill their professional responsibilities competently, only a small percentage have, by virtue of the quality and amount of their contributions, distinguished themselves sufficiently to warrant recognition."
