Montclair State University Center for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology to offer free hearing screenings
Posted in: Communication Sciences Disorders
In honor of “Better Hearing and Speech Month,” The Montclair State University Center for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology will offer free hearing screenings to the public from May13-23, 2013.
Open to individuals of all ages, the screenings are available Monday through Friday by appointment at the Center’s off-campus clinic at 1515 Broad Street, Bloomfield, N.J. Interested parties should call 973-655-3934 to schedule.
The non-invasive, pure tone screening takes only a few minutes to complete. All testing is administered by one of Montclair State’s audiology doctoral students under the direct supervision of a licensed, certified Doctor of Audiology.
More than 35 million Americans suffer from hearing loss, making it one of the nation’s most common disabilities. But the stigma of wearing hearing aids makes many people delay assessment and treatment, even when they notice their hearing deteriorating.
You may have a hearing loss if you:
- Frequently ask people to repeat themselves
- Have trouble hearing when there is background noise
- Often turn your ear toward a sound to hear it better
- Understand people better when you wear your glasses or look directly at their faces
- Lose your place in group conversations
- Keep the volume on your radio or television at a level that others say is too loud
- Have pain or ringing in your ears
- Feel that people seem to mumble
If you have one or more of these symptoms this is a good time to have your hearing checked.
