Census data from 2020 shows that approximately 1 in 4 Americans still need to register to vote. Each year, millions of Americans are unable to vote due to registration deadlines, incomplete registrations, or a lack of knowledge about how to register. National Voter Registration Day efforts are designed to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote through voter registration awareness campaigns and opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.

The holiday is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).
