PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Center for the Digital Humanities is pleased to announce two summer grant opportunities open to all full-time CHSS faculty: a Digital Humanities Seed Grant and a Digital Humanities Project Grant.  The objective of these grants is to foster research, scholarship, and external grant-seeking in the Digital Humanities. Collaborations among individuals, departments, colleges, and institutions are encouraged; however, the principal investigator of the grant application must have an appointment in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Applications will be reviewed by the Center for the Digital Humanities Faculty Advisory Committee and recommendations provided to the Dean for final determination.

GRANT CATEGORIES

Digital Humanities Seed Grant ($1,000) – Two Awards

The CHSS Center for the Digital Humanities Seed Grants are intended to provide summer stipends for developing external grant applications focused on the Digital Humanities. Projects already receiving Dean’s office funding will not be considered. The period for the grant development is summer of 2019.

Those awarded Seed Grants must:

• Submit an Executive Summary to AJ Kelton, Director of the CDH. The Executive Summary is due 14 days after the first day of classes of the Fall 2019 semester
• Give a presentation at the Spring Digital Humanities Day
• Provide the director of the CDH with a copy of the submitted external grant application and proof of submission.

Digital Humanities Project Grant ($4,000) – Two Awards

The CHSS Center for the Digital Humanities Project Grants are intended to provide summer stipends to support an ongoing Digital Humanities research project. The work is to take place, and all funding provided to faculty, no later than August 31, 2019. Projects already receiving Dean’s Office funding are ineligible; those with existing external grant funding will have priority.

Those awarded Project Grants must:

• Submit an Executive Summary to AJ Kelton, Director of the CDH. The Executive Summary is due 14 days after the first day of classes of the Fall semester following the award period.
• Complete the Activity Report form online, addressing each of the items outlined. The Activity report is due by the first Monday of December following the award period.
• Give a presentation at the Spring Digital Humanities Day
• Co/lead a Community of Practice centered on your area or research, to meet approximately once monthly through the academic year following the award.

APPLICATION and SUBMISSION

Please submit your application using the online form (CLOSED). You will be asked to fill in the following:

• Primary Contact
  Name, email address, phone, department
• List of Collaborators
  Names, contact information, affiliations, roles and what they bring to the collaboration
• Narrative
  Describe the planned topic area and scope of work, how the results advance the field of Digital Humanities, what value the project will add to the field, and address the specifics indicated in each grant. The narrative should be of sufficient length to detail the specifics of your application.
• Budget and Justification
• Current CV
• Additional details such as name of agency and URL for external grants or intended journal for publications, technology needed or being requested, and what the CDH can do to support the grant proposal, research, and/or project.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Projects that are awarded Summer Grants agree to include language in presentations, projects, or publications acknowledging the Center for the Digital Humanities involvement.
• A mission of the Center for the Digital Humanities is to support and provide digital artifacts representing the work the center is doing. Awardees agree to have their Executive Summary, appropriate portions of the Activity Report, and/or other collateral material posted to the CDH web site. In addition, presentations, including those at the Digital Humanities Days, will be photographed, recorded, and streamed live to the Center’s YouTube Channel, and the resulting digital media will be made available through the Center’s website and social media channels, unless doing so would violate an ethical or IRB restriction, as determined by the Principal Investigator.

SEED GRANTS

1. The Executive Summary should be 500 words, and is due 14 days after the first day of classes of the fall semester following the award period. It should address each of the following:
   1. Has your understanding of your subject, or your approach to it, changed significantly as a result of the work putting the external grant together?
   2. Explain/discuss your work’s contribution to your area of research and to the field of Digital Humanities.
   3. Give a detailed account of spending. If funding was provided to an individual, please be specific as to what that individual did/accomplished in exchange.
   4. Respond to any input provided by the FAC in the acceptance letter.
2. Provide the director of the CDH with a copy of the submitted external grant application and proof of submission.

PROJECT GRANTS

The Activity Report will be completed online and will require input in the following areas:

• Please provide a detailed summary of the results of your work funded by this grant. This should include, but not be limited to:
  • How your project speaks to the purpose of the CDH Summer Grants, to “foster research, scholarship, and external grant-seeking in the Digital Humanities”
  • A brief summary of your research process
  • Your major findings or results
  • Whether you accomplished the goals of the project
  • Any lessons you learned
  • What you might do differently
  • The current status of your work
