JOB POSITION TITLE: Immersive Technologies Librarian

DEPARTMENT: Digital Scholarship Lab

STATUS: Full-time

JOB ID: 217246

With apologies for cross-posting.

This coming year, River Campus Libraries is building a 3,000 sq ft AR/VR space in our Science and Engineering Library. In support of the new space and programming for the space, we are hiring a full-time permanent position. The person in this position will help build a program for students, faculty, and staff interested in learning more about XR. While the first year of the program is focused on very basic on-boarding and community building, our goal to build a space and program that will facilitate both introductions to AR/VR, creation of AR/VR content/apps, and research on AR/VR.

I am particularly interested in excellent educators who have the capacity to learn and teach digital tools and methods. This position requires a graduate degree in library and information science, or equivalent degree and experience. We will begin reviewing applications in mid-September. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Position Summary: The Immersive Technologies Librarian’s primary focus is the development of Studio X, set to open in 2020, a program and space for students, staff, and faculty to explore, experiment, and experience augmented, extended, mixed, and virtual reality (XR) and related technologies. The purpose of Studio X is to inspire innovative and interdisciplinary engagement, and to facilitate the development of a rich community of practice for XR, an area that is a strategic priority at the University of Rochester. With the support of a range of collaborators within the libraries and beyond, the Immersive Technologies Librarian designs and delivers an exploratory program that introduces students and faculty to tools, approaches, and technologies that make up XR, and supports their incorporation into teaching, learning and research.

The Immersive Technologies Librarian will be part of a team designing Studio X that includes the Digital Scholarship Lab, a team already consulting on XR projects and is deeply engaged in innovative research, learning and teaching. This role also has as collaborators Outreach Librarians, who provide on-ramp programming on a range of research and technology skills. These peers will join forces with the Immersive Technologies Librarian to encourage the use of XR technologies and build a community of practice.
