Montclair State University provides students seeking teacher certification with a wide variety of program options, including bachelor’s and combined bachelor’s/master’s degrees. Our programs are designed so that students who seek to obtain a bachelor’s degree and teacher certification declare both a major and a certification area.
Bachelor’s Degree and Single Certification Programs
Students will select from one of the following certification areas.
- Early Childhood (Preschool – Grade 3)
- Elementary (Kindergarten – Grade 6)
- Secondary Education (Preschool – Grade 12)

* Holders of Chemistry certification can teach Chemistry, Environmental Science, and General Science. Biochemistry majors must change major to Chemistry upon admission to the Teacher Education program for certification in Chemistry.
** Holders of Physics certification can teach Physics, Environmental Science, and General Science.
*** Holders of Physical Science certification can teach Physics, Chemistry, Physical, Environmental, General, Earth, and Space Science.
Combined Bachelor’s Master’s Degree with Dual Certification Program
Students interested in obtaining both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree may apply for the Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Program with Dual Certification. The Combined Bachelor’s/Masters’ Program enables students to obtain an initial certification and a secondary certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities.
