Tuesday September 28
3 p.m., University Hall 3048: film lecture
John Waters, Director of Graduate Irish Studies, Director of Undergraduate Irish Studies, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Irish Studies at Glucksman Ireland House, NYU, will lecture on “Mad(e) Men: John Ford and the aesthetics of masculine reformation in The Quiet Man.”
Following John’s talk, there will be an informal reception and open discussion (students, faculty, everyone) on The Quiet Man generally, with a focus on masculinity (but all topics welcome).

Thursday October 14
1 p.m., Cohen Lounge: poetry reading
Vona Groarke, one of Ireland’s best younger poets, and winner of the Michael Hartnett Award, the Hennessy award, the Brendan Behan Memorial Prize, the Strokestown International Poetry Award, and the Stand Magazine Poetry Prize, will give a reading. Vona teaches at the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester.
Thursday October 28
1 p.m., Cohen Lounge: poetry reading
Michael Longley, one of the most illustrious Irish poets writing today, will give a reading. Michael has received numerous awards, including the American Irish Foundation Award, the T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize, the Whitbread Prize, and the Hawthornden Prize. He is also the recipient of the prestigious 2001 Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. He was Ireland Professor of Poetry 2007 -2010. Michael is a brilliant poet and a superb reader.

Tuesday November 30
2:45 pm, University Hall 3048: film lecture
Tony Tracy, Director of the Huston School of Film & Digital Media at the National University of Ireland, Galway, will speak on “Adam and Paul and the Urban Irish Film.”
Following Tony’s talk, there will be a reception and open discussion of the film. I can lend a dvd to anyone interested in joining the discussion.
Tony Tracy has published widely on transnational cinema as well as on Irish film. He has experience in all aspects of film production and culture and has worked for Miramax Films in NY. And, as his web site says, Tony “was senior education officer at the Irish Film Institute from 1996-2000 and central to the development of a pioneering education programme for film leading to the introduction of film in the leaving certificate English curriculum.”
