Big Pharma and the Risky World of the Human Subject

Posted in: Center for Writing Excellence, MontclairBook

We are pleased to call attention to the following upcoming talk at Montclair State, which clearly ties into the subject matter of this year’s Montclair Book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

On Tuesday, October 2, 2012, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., anthropologist Roberto Abadie will discuss his latest book, The Professional Guinea Pig, where he documents the emergence of the professional research subject in Phase I clinical trials testing the safety of drugs in development. Drawing on ethnographic research among self-identified “professional guinea pigs” in Philadelphia, Abadie examines their experiences and views on the conduct of the trials and the risks they assume by participating.

The talk will take place in Dickson Hall, Brantl Hall Lecture Room

Sponsored by the Department of Anthropology, Research Compliance, Provost Office & Department of Health and Nutrition Sciences.  For more information, please email:  bergerh@montclair.edu
