Montclair State University has partnered with the Volcker Alliance to join the Next Generation Service Corps (NextGen Service), a national network of over 20 higher education institutions committed to preparing undergraduate students for public service careers. Launched in AY2022, with a generous grant from the Volcker Alliance, the NGSC offers students an opportunity to learn about complex challenges from different perspectives; develop essential leadership skills through experiential learning; and build a diverse network of student peers. The NGSC will be a four-year, developmental program comprising three core elements: Community Action Teams; multiple cross-sector internships with governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and/or private corporations; and a credentialed certificate program.
The purpose of the NGSC is to “introduce undergraduates from all majors to public service values and build practical, collaborative leadership skills” and open doors “to careers in public service for college students” (Volcker Alliance, “Next Generation Service Corps”). NGSC students receive a $2,000 per year scholarship, and attend bi-weekly cohort meetings examining state and local public service needs and positive service outcomes to address those needs. Students also participate in “National Days of Service” events on campus, and participate in training sessions, conferences, and co-curricular activities to enhance their understanding of civic engagement and advocacy.
