Dr. Elizabeth Erwin’s new book The Power of Presence was recently published by Gryphon House, Inc. Dr. Erwin is a Professor in the Teaching and Learning Department.
“Young children live in the moment as they wonder, ponder, and notice ordinary treasures in everyday life that adults can so easily take for granted,” said Dr. Erwin. “When we take the time to pause, we realize children have much to teach us.”
Featuring diverse child and educator voices, The Power of Presence also provides research, knowledge, and tools to demonstrate how engaging in a deeper sense of awareness with young learners transforms classrooms, schools, and beyond. By engaging in reflective inquiry and mindfulness practices together, teachers and young children can co-create vibrant learning environments rooted in justice, joy, and humanity.
Dr. Erwin prepares current and future teachers to think critically, reflect deeply, and teach inclusively. Over the past 30 years, the commitment to educational equity in early childhood has been at the heart of her teaching, advocacy, and research. Within the primary theme of challenging injustice (with a particular emphasis on disability), Dr. Erwin’s scholarship has focused on multiple strands exploring early childhood inclusive education, mindfulness, well-being, and reflective practices, and family-professional partnerships. In pursuit of social action – locally and globally – Dr. Erwin has published widely in academic journals and books and has engaged in international partnerships and teaching worldwide.
