Dr. Zoë Burkholder Receives Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award

Dr. Zoë Burkholder, Educational Foundations Professor, recently received the 2022 Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award from the Society of Professors of Education (SPE) for her book, An African American Dilemma: A History of School Integration and Civil Rights in the North (Oxford University Press, 2021)
The Society of Professors of Education is an organization which since 1902 has provided a forum for addressing the issues facing the discipline and vocation of education. It is a professional and academic association open to all persons engaged in teacher preparation or related activities. Its purpose is to serve the diverse needs and interests of the education professoriate. The Society’s primary goal is to provide a forum for consideration of major issues, tasks, problems, and challenges confronting professional educators.
Additionally, Dr. Burkholder is the founding director of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Education Project in the College of Education and Human Services at Montclair State University. She is a historian of education with expertise in antiracist education, school integration, the social construction of race in schools, and educational activism among Black, Native American, Latinx, and Asian American communities.
Her book, An African American Dilemma: A History of School Integration and Civil Rights in the North, analyzes debates within northern Black communities over the question of whether school integration or separate, Black-controlled schools provide the best strategy to equalize public education.
Dr. Burkholder will receive the award at the Annual Meeting of the SPE, which will take place virtually during the annual AERA convention.
