Dr. Jamaal Matthews, Associate Professor in the Educational Foundations Department, will serve as Principal Investigator on the 1-year project, “Belonging Centered Instruction: An Approach to Establishing Inclusive Mathematics Classrooms.” This program is in collaboration with Dr. DeLeon Gray, Associate Professor of Educational Psychology at the North Carolina State College of Education, and is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The project grew out of a 2018 award-winning paper, co-authored by Dr. Gray, Dr. Matthews, and Dr. Elan Hope that investigated the opportunities black adolescents have to feel a sense of belonging at school and suggested aspects of the school environment that can support that feeling.
