Alumna Michelle Huff Writes for SHAPE America
Posted in: College News and Events
Michelle Huff, a health and physical education graduate, recently wrote a blog post for SHAPE America that was distributed via email to all members of the organization. In the article, Huff discusses how everyone should do an act of kindness for someone on World Kindness Day (November 13), and every other day as well. Huff implemented SHAPE America’s health. moves. minds. program in her health and physical education classes, being the first in New Jersey to pilot this new program. There is an emphasis on social and emotional learning while teaching kindness, empowerment, empathy, respect, respectful listening, mindfulness, diversity, equity, inclusion, and teamwork.
Huff gives an example of how the program promotes kindness amongst the students, as notes they passed to one another included phrases such as “You are so beautiful” and “If no one has told you that you are loved today, just know that you are loved by me.”
This is a wonderful example of how graduates from the College of Education and Human Services at Montclair State University are helping to make the world a healthier, better educated, more just society.
Huff is a health and physical educator at Maxson Middle School in Plainfield, NJ, as well as the varsity softball coach at Plainfield High School. A passionate HPE advocate, Huff is on the State Standards Review Team for Health and Physical Education and is an active member of NJAHPERD and SHAPE America. Follow her on Twitter @mshuff_maxsonpe.
