MSU Food Recovery Network Fighting Food Waste on Campus and Beyond
Posted in: College News and Events, Parents and Family
The MSU Chapter of the Food Recovery Network (FRN) was founded in Fall 2017 by five dietetic students as part of a course project for NUFD 292, Applied Community Nutrition. The FRN is a national movement of over 225 student-led chapters at colleges and universities across the country. With a joint mission to reduce both food insecurity and food waste, the FRN at MSU rescues wholesome, edible surplus food from campus dining services that would have otherwise been discarded and donates it to hunger-fighting community partners. In just three months since its inception, the FRN has recovered over 700 pounds of food from the Student Center dining hall and shared it with the Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless, Inc. (MESH), a local non-profit that provides essential services to the homeless, food insecure, shut-in, and even food insecure college students through partnership with 30 houses of worship. Additional community partners and student volunteers are currently being sought to grow the program.
