The Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy, a partnership between Montclair State University’s College of Education and Human Services, Newark Board of Education and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), provides students enrolled in East Side or University High School the opportunity to take college-level courses, at no cost, that will apply towards a degree at Montclair State University. Students in the program will also receive stipends of $3,700 from AFT to help offset education-related costs and ensure their progression in the program. When they graduate from high school, Red Hawks Rising students will receive a preliminary contract to return to Newark to teach upon completion of their Montclair degree.
Recently, the program was mentioned in an article by NJ.com about the shortage of racially and ethnically diverse teachers in New Jersey.
The RHR Academy was also covered by The Montclarion, Montclair State University’s independent student-run news and media source.
