The United States Department of Education is hosting “From Recovery to Thriving: How American Rescue Plan is Supporting America’s Students,” on April 27, 2022, from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. This will bring together education leaders, advocates, and philanthropic partners to discuss how American Rescue Plan (ARP) is helping students and schools recover from the pandemic and new commitments that will help give them the opportunity to thrive in the future.
Dr. Mayida Zaal, Associate Professor in the Teaching and Learning Department, will be a presenter in the session entitled, “Strategies to Address Staff Shortages.” This session will highlight a local grown your own strategy partnership between a school district, a union, and a university. You will also learn about innovative ways a district is using American Rescue Plan funds to incentivize new teachers into the profession as well as retain existing staff.
Dr. Zaal’s research focuses on participatory action research (PAR) as a transformative pedagogy and on understanding the lived experiences of immigrant-origin youth. She is particularly interested in the preparation of teachers working in diverse settings.
