The Wipro Science Teacher Leadership Fellowship program recently received award funding to support Phase III of their project through the University of Massachusetts Boston. This is the third extension grant they received to continue to support teacher leaders in six NJ districts.
The faculty team includes Dr. Emily Klein (Teaching and Learning Professor), Dr. Mika Munakata (Mathematics Professor), and Dr. Monica Taylor (Educational Foundations Professor), with Colette Killian as project manager.
The Montclair State University Wipro Science Education Fellowship (SEF) is a professional development program designed to develop experienced K–12 science teachers as teacher leaders within their districts. The program was originally developed by UMass Boston and was implemented in similar ways across the four universities. The group works with teachers of varying disciplines and grade levels from five high-needs school districts. Wipro Limited, a global information technology and consulting corporation with a vested interest in public education, in both India and the US, has funded the program through three phases. They completed the initial five-year Wipro SEF program in June 2017 with 60 fellows, and then offered an extension (Phase 2) to foster implementation of teacher leadership within these districts by trained fellows, working collaboratively with principals and/or administrators. They also just received $561,630 for Phase 3 which will allow them to double our number of fellows, add a new district, and create sustainable structures for teacher leadership within districts.
