Dr. Patricia Virella, Assistant Professor in Educational Leadership, recently had two studies accepted into the EdPrepLab resource library. They are: “Leveraging the Crisis for Equity and Access in the Long Term” and “Leading After the Storm: New York City Principal’s Deployment of Equity-Oriented Leadership Post-Hurricane Maria.”
Dr. Virella also wrote for PBS News Hour Classroon’s Educator Voice Blog about her daughter being called a racial slur, their reactions, and advice to other parents.
She applies critical lenses and qualitative methods to investigate how school leaders enact equity-oriented leadership when crises occur. Virella also investigates how educational reform policies shape school leaders’ equity-orientation and impact districts that serve marginalized communities. She seeks to answer research questions to enable transformation and liberation in school leaders, districts, and policies.
