Students playing intramural basketball in the Student Recreation Center.

Wiffleball Rules

All Montclair State University School Policies are in effect, including Student Code of Conduct.
All Montclair State University Department of Campus Recreation “Intramurals 101” policies are in effect.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. All team sports are broken down into 4 different leagues which include: Men’s, Women’s, Organization, and Open. The Organization league is open to all MSU-affiliated Clubs and Organizations who register using the $60 team fee. The Open league places no restriction on gender, gender identity, or gender expression. Each player can only join one team per league (I.e. A player is allowed to play in one Open league and one Women’s/Men’s league). In leagues with multiple divisions, such as basketball, players are permitted to play in Men’s A or Men’s B only.
  2. A team’s roster should be completed prior to their first game, but additional players are more than welcome. Be advised that they MUST play in ONE regular season game before being eligible for the playoffs. All players participating in a game must be listed on that game’s scoresheet. The players who are listed will be entered onto that team’s roster. Names of individuals can be added to the original roster, prior to the new team member playing, by listing that player’s name as well as his/her ID number on the scoresheet. A player must play in at least one regular season game to be eligible to participate in the playoffs. Rosters can have a maximum of 16 players.
  3. Assumption of Risk, Waiver and Release from Liability Form: All players must pay and sign up on imleagues.com. You MUST PAY YOUR REGISTRATION FEE BEFORE YOU PLAY in order to be eligible to play because your payment counts as your waiver. The only players who MUST sign a physical waiver as well as pay are those who play on Greek and Organization teams.
  4. Checking ID’s: Before a contest, event, or activity, all members of a team shall present to the scorekeeper their pictured Montclair State University ID card. Those players listed on the scoresheet and verified by a scorekeeper are considered to have participated in that contest. Should a participant arrive at the contest after it has started, the participant must still sign in with the scorekeeper to verify that they are on the roster. Should a player not be verified by a scorekeeper, that individual shall be considered an ineligible player.
  5. Forgotten ID Policy: If a player forgets his or her ID, that player is ineligible to participate in the SRC activity.
  6. The captain is the representative of his/her team and may address an official and/or Director on matters of interpretation or to obtain essential information so long as it is done in a courteous manner. Any player may address an official to request a time-out in the case of an emergency or when applicable.

THE GAME

  1. The field will be set up similar to a baseball field.
    1. Home plate will be at the center of the baseline of the basketball court.
    2. The pitcher’s line for Open games will be at the yellow line at the top of the arc three point line. The pitcher’s line for Men’s games will be at the red line closest to half court.
  2. Three outs to an inning per team. Each game consists of six (6) innings or fifty (50) minutes. No full inning may start after fifty (50) minutes of game play.
  3. In all leagues, teams will pitch to their own batters. Each batter is permitted a maximum of three pitches per at-bat.
  4. An official will be provided for all calls.
  5. Directors will keep track of time, batting lineups and scoring.

PLAYERS

  1. Each team may field a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 5 players.
  2. The captain will set a batting order prior to each game which includes all players present for that game. The batting order will stay consistent throughout the game regardless of who fields during a given inning.
  3. All players must field at least one inning.
  4. The away team is up first and is designated by IMLeagues.
  5. Players are not allowed to wear hats or jewelry of any kind.
  6. Players are required to wear athletic attire, including non-marking sneakers with soles.

FORFEITS

  1. If one team is ready to play at game time, but one team either has not arrived or does not have enough players yet then for the first ten (10) minutes one (1) run is scored every two (2) minutes. After that ten minutes is up it is a forfeit.
  2. In order to be credited for the forfeit “win,” the team receiving the forfeit win for the contest must have the minimum number of required players to start a game.
  3. If at game time neither team has the minimum number of participants required to play, the IM Sports Director will call the game a double forfeit.
  4. Any team that forfeits a total of ONE game within the season will be ineligible for the playoffs and will be removed from the league. Captains are responsible for entering time preferences and availability information for their team on IMLeagues, at the time of registration.

MERCY RULE

  1. If either team is leading by 10 or more runs after 4 full innings, the game will be called a mercy.

OVERTIME

  1. There are NO extra innings in the regular season. Extra innings will ONLY be played in the playoffs.

PITCHING

  1. Balls will be provided by IM Sports.
  2. Teams will pitch to their own team. Both overhand and underhand pitching is allowed.
    1. The pitcher’s line for Open League is at the yellow three point line, and at the red line for Men’s.
    2. The batter will only get 3 pitches in an at bat regardless of the quality of pitch.
    3. Pitches that bounce before reaching the batter are declared dead, and the batter cannot attempt to hit a bouncing pitch.
    4. The pitcher must not interfere with the ball or impede a defensive player from making a play. Any ball which strikes the pitcher is a dead ball and does not count as one of the three (3) pitches.
    5. If a pitcher deliberately interferes with a ball in play, the batter is automatically out.

BATTING

  1. Each batter receives three (3) pitches from the pitcher.
  2. Any ball which strikes the pitcher is a dead ball and does not count as one of the three (3) pitches.
    1. If the batter fails to put any of these 3 pitches into play in fair territory they will be called out.
  3. There is no bunting. The batter must take a full swing at the ball. A batter who bunts the ball is out and the ball is immediately dead.
  4. The ball cannot make contact with the ground before being hit. This will be ruled a strike.
  5.   Any ball which hits the ceiling, a basketball hoop/backboard, any rafters, or anything else above the playing field in fair territory is in play so long as it still crosses the half court line. A catch off of one of these objects will not be an out.
  6. A ball which hits the track railing, the wall directly beneath the railing, or the ceiling underneath the track is a fair ball. The fielding players can then field the ball and the base runner can advance to another base at their own discretion
  7. Any ball which is hit onto the track over the railing between the first pole at half court and the second pole to the left of it will be considered a ground rule double.
  8. Any ball which is hit onto the track over the railing to the left of the first pole at the curve of the track will be considered a homerun.
  9. Bats will provided by IM Sports.
  10. The ball must be hit past the half court line to be considered fair. Fielders must start each pitch behind the half court line. If a fielder touches a ball before the half court line on the third pitch (making it foul), the batter will receive another pitch.
  11. A batter can be out by any of the following:
    1. A foul ball after the third pitch.
    2. Force outs
    3. Fly outs
    4. Tag Outs
    5. Bunts
    6. Sliding as a baserunner

BASERUNNING

  1. There is no leading or stealing. A runner is allowed to leave the base once the batter makes contact with the ball.
  2. If the runner makes contact with a base and the base slides away from its original position on the field, the runner is safe (as long as it occurred before the tag or putout) and is not liable to be out while the base is dislodged. If the runner attempts to advance to another base, he/she is liable to be put out and must return to the position of the dislodged base (not the original position of the base).
  3. Base runners are responsible for avoiding all collisions with fielders anytime a fielder is making a play on the ball (fielding, throwing, catching). If the base runner does not avoid the collision, play will be ruled dead, the base runner is called out, the batter is awarded first (unless involved in the collision), and all runners return to their original base unless forced to the next base.
  4. There is no sliding and any player who attempts to slide will be out.
  5. There is no pegging.

*All rules are subject to change at a moment’s notice and are at the discretion of the Intramural Sports Director. If any participant argues with an official or Director, they may be ejected from the game and/or the field space. If any issues occur, Campus Police may be called.
