Monica Youn was a distinguished lawyer before she became a distinguished poet. In another life, she was a Rhodes Scholar, a graduate of Yale Law School, inaugural Brennan Center Constitutional Fellow at New York University Law School, and a pledged delegate for Obama in 2008. Her books of poetry include Barter (2003), Ignatz (2010; a finalist for the National Book Award), and Blackacre (2016). She has also been a MacDowell Fellow and was awarded a residency at Yaddo. Youn's poetry is elegant and intense. As a review of her first book noted, Youn "examines highly conceptual realms through imagery and syntax that seem magical in their ability to make the abstract concrete." As she said in a recent interview, "I don’t have an experience and then go out looking for cultural correlatives. A lot of my life is experiencing cultural work."
