On a train to Auschwitz following their betrayal, 17-year-old Heinz Geiringer revealed to his younger sister Eva that he had created paintings and poetry during the past two years in hiding, and that his work was hidden beneath the floorboards in his attic hiding spot. Heinz asked Eva to make a promise. If he should die in the camps, retrieve the artwork and show the world, so he would not be forgotten.
The story sits in the shadow of a well-known Holocaust story – The Diary of Anne Frank. After the war, Eva Geiringer Schloss became the posthumous stepsister of her Amsterdam neighbor Anne when her mother married Anne’s father, Otto Frank. While the world knows Anne Frank's story, this film introduces the story of Heinz, his paintings, and his sister’s efforts to find and share her brother's remarkable art with the world.
Q&A with director Mr. Steve McCarthy, producer Ms. Susan Kerner, professor of religion, Dr. Kate Temoney, and director of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Education Project Dr. Zoe Burkholder to follow.
