Graduate Business Programs Academic Policy

Graduate Business Programs Academic Policy (Effective Fall 2023)

While Graduate School policy governs minimum standards for academic actions, graduate students in the Feliciano School of Business will have additional academic requirements placed upon them in certain circumstances. These are described below. All graduate students in the School of Business, regardless of modality of program, or number of credits in which they are enrolled, fall under these requirements and must avail themselves of this information:

  1. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.00. If a student’s GPA falls below a 3.00, the student will be placed on academic probation by the Graduate School. The student must raise his/her GPA to at least a 3.00 upon completion of an additional six credits of coursework or one semester, whichever is later. This may include summer sessions.
  2. Failure to achieve a GPA of 3.00 within the prescribed period of time will lead to academic dismissal by the Graduate School.
  3. A student who earns an F grade must request permission to repeat the course, and if approved, must repeat that course at its next offering, unless he/she has been dismissed. The student may be allowed to enroll in additional courses (this will be at the discretion of their academic advisor, to ensure that the student is positioned for academic success).
  4. Upon earning a second F grade, whether or not the first F grade has already been replaced with a passing grade, the student must request permission to repeat the course(s) and if approved, must successfully repeat the course(s) prior to enrolling in/completing any additional courses.
  5. Upon earning a third F grade, whether or not the first and/or second F grades have already been replaced with a passing grade, the student’s Academic Program may recommend to The Graduate School that the student be dismissed.

Attendance and Travel Policy for Graduate Business International Students

As an international F-1 graduate business student, we know that you recognize that with the privilege of studying abroad come responsibilities. We want to ensure that you are aware of and adhere to important policies regarding class attendance especially considering the unique requirements for students on visas.

  • The majority of your classes are 7 weeks long, which means each class meeting is crucial for your academic success. Missing the initial meeting(s) of a class, leaving in the middle or before the semester ends, may negatively impact your learning experience as well as your grade/academic standing in the program. Please maintain attendance at all classes throughout the term.
  • Leaving the United States or failing to maintain consistent attendance can also jeopardize your visa status. To avoid any complications, it is critical to remain in the country and attend all your classes regularly from the beginning until the end of the semester.
  • Should extenuating circumstances arise where short-term travel during the semester is essential, you will need to request permission to travel through the MyGlobal Portal and you will be required to provide documentation supporting the reason for your travel request. Your professors are not empowered to grant such permission and have been directed to refer any requests to the Office of Global Engagement and the MBA & Graduate Programs office.
  • Missing class meetings during your leave will result in the loss of points associated with in-class activities, including quizzes, exams, and attendance. Professors are unable to offer alternative assignments or exams to recover lost points, which may negatively impact your overall grade in the course(s).

We understand the importance of visiting home or traveling, and we encourage travel during university scheduled breaks or when classes are not in session. Please review your class meeting dates in NEST and the Academic Calendar here.
