Navigating Politics in the Workplace: Dr. Wu’s Strategies for Fostering Respect and Collaboration
Posted in: Management
Dr. Te Wu, Feliciano School of Business Associate Professor in the Management department, co-authored a piece for the Central Penn Business Journal about how to deal with a politically charged workplace. In today’s polarized political climate, workplace discussions around politics have become increasingly common, often creating tension and divisions among employees. A poll found that many employees are reluctant to share their political views at work due to fear of negative consequences or harassment. This has led to a decline in morale, collaboration, and job satisfaction, as political debates can escalate into conflict and distrust.
To navigate this issue, employees are encouraged to practice strategies such as active listening, setting clear boundaries, and focusing on shared values. Active listening fosters empathy and reduces misunderstandings, while setting boundaries helps to maintain a professional atmosphere and protect emotional well-being. Additionally, promoting self-care practices, like mindfulness or short breaks, can reduce stress during tense discussions. Ultimately, by fostering a culture of respect and understanding, employees can create a more harmonious and productive work environment, despite political differences.
