The John J. Cali School of Music Introduces a New Advanced Certificate for Music Education
Posted in: Cali School of Music News
The John J. Cali School of Music is excited to announce a new graduate program that is the first of its kind in the New Jersey area —the Advanced Certificate for Music Education. Designed with today’s educator in mind, the Advanced Certificate is a unique opportunity for music teachers at all levels and specializations to experience the benefits of graduate study without committing to a master’s program. Applications for the program are now being accepted for the 2016-2017 academic year.
“The Advanced Certificate is great for teachers who want to advance their qualifications for career enhancement but can’t take the time to pursue a full master’s degree,” explained Dr. Lisa DeLorenzo, director of the program. “The program serves as a stand-alone credential; at the same time, 12 of the 15 credits can go towards the M.A. in Music Education for students who want to keep going.”
Course Offerings, Faculty and Facilities
Course work in the Advanced Certificate for Music Education is focused on both pedagogical theory and hands-on strategies relevant to today’s music classes. Classes are offered year-round, and are available in online, hybrid and in-classroom formats.
Hybrid and online courses include:
- Technology for Music Teachers
- Psychology of Music
- Teaching Music as Democratic Practice
- Independent Study in Music Education
- Music Education Techniques for Children with Disabilities
In-classroom courses include:
- Critical and Creative Thinking in Music
- Teaching World Music
- Critical Issues in Music Education
- Movement and Dance for Children
- Piano for Music Teachers
- Independent Study in Music Education
- Band Literature for the Music Educator
For students who want to get a jump-start on the program, the Cali School is offering two courses this summer, both of which can be applied towards the certificate requirements in the Fall 2016 semester:
- Creative Movement and Dance for Children (July 12 – August 4)
- Music Education Techniques for Children with Disabilities (August 8 – 25)
A high caliber faculty of national and international prominence as clinicians, authors, and researchers, create a challenging and stimulating learning space where students have ample opportunities for discussion. Class sizes are small enough to provide individual attention while large enough to enhance networking opportunities among other music education professionals.
The John J. Cali School of Music is a modern facility with a large parking deck just a block away from the building. In addition to its faculty committed to teaching excellence, the school presents over 250 performances and masterclasses each year.
