Joel Penney, Associate Professor in Communication and Media, offered commentary to several pop culture-focused stories in the news, including this MSNBC piece on internet hoaxes; a Christian Science Monitor article about the viral Montgomery brawl; an article in The Hill about conservative pop culture; and a USA Today article on the same subject.
Penney specializes in new media, critical/cultural studies, and political communication and theory. His research focuses on the uses of participatory and digital media for social and political advocacy as well as the construction of collective identities. His new book, Pop Culture, Politics, and the News: Entertainment Journalism in the Polarized Media Landscape, is now available from Oxford University Press.
