On March 21, 2023, University College hosted Major Madness, a centralized showcase, featuring all the academic and social opportunities that are available within each College or School on campus. At the showcase, students had the chance to explore each College or School’s different majors, minors, and certificates, learn about ways to get involved within them, and meet other students, faculty, and staff members to guide them through their exploration. Held in the main gym of the Campus Recreation building, the sports-themed event also featured a DJ, prizes, and a hot buffet lunch.

The event is a catalyst for students to decide upon or declare a major, with 60-75% of University College major declarations each academic year occurring in the spring semester. A number of students took the opportunity to declare their majors to the cheers of University College staff dressed as basketball referees.

Gio Carluccio, a freshman, was among the students who made their decision, choosing one of Montclair’s newest majors, Recording Arts and Production within the John J. Cali School of Music. “It feels so surreal to be choosing a major today,” he said. “I’m excited to see what’s in store.”

In declaring this field, Carluccio says he was following his heart as he enjoys creating music at home. It wasn’t the path his parents initially encouraged him to follow, but he says they’ve been supportive of his choice.

Freshmen Shaniqua Williams and Jared Bailey also declared their majors as Communication and Media Studies and Visual Arts, respectively at the event.

The College of the Arts showed prospective students our programs, including hands-on presentations. Professor Cathy Bebout from the Department of Art and Design led demonstrations on printing, using a 3D-printed miniature press. Visitors left with a personal souvenir of a miniature print, along with an understanding of and appreciation for the Visual Arts.

The event was a great success, and the College of the Arts welcomes all of the newly declared students.
